Palmer Coolum Resort has won the 2012 Gourmet Traveller Best Golf Resort award. Now in its sixth year, the awards recognise the cream of Australia's travel crop.
The 150 hectare Palmer Coolum Resort, formerly known as the Hyatt Coolum Resort unfolds at the base of Mount Coolum and is home to the Australian PGA Championship. The 18 hole Robert Trent Jones Jr designed course is nestled amid rainforest with ample water hazards, bunkers, bushland and doglegs to tempt the most proficient golfer. But aside from an internationally renowned arena for the golf tragics in the family, there are spa facilities, restaurants, no fewer than nine swimming pools and a kids club for youngsters.
A panel of travel experts drafts a shortlist of finalists, which are then put to the vote by readers of Gourmet Traveller and viewers of Nine Network's Getaway program. The online poll for this year, drew more than 22,000 votes at gourmettraveller.com.au
Barnbougle in Tasmania was awarded runner-up in the Best Golf Resort category.
