“I don't like cricket oh no, I love it…” See world class cricket action on the Sunshine Coast from 7 - 16 August. The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2012 is coming to the Sunshine Coast. The region will play host to Zimbabwe, Namibia, West Indies, Nepal, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Scotland and the current defending champions, Australia.
Each team will be batting and bowling for glory and the unpredictability of the game will thrill spectators. There will be shouts of “howzat”, and the crowd will remain in suspense momentarily as the umpire either gives a shake of his head, or raises his finger in the air which will direct the batsman back to the sheds. The international tournament was initially staged as a one-off event in 1988 as part of Australia's Bicentenary celebrations, and has been held every two years since 1998. This year will be the ninth edition of the event. The Sunshine Coast will host games which showcase the world's best emerging players. While cricket fans in more than 100 countries including India, England, New Zealand and South Africa will have to rely on ESPN Star Sports to see the action, Sunshine Coast locals and visitors alike, will see the action live.
Past legends who have taken part in the U19 Cricket World Cup include Australian’s Michael Clarke, Shane Watson and Cameron White, along with Brian Lara from the West Indies, Shoaib Malik from Pakistan, Kiwi Chris Cairns, Suresh Raina from India and Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain from England.
