As the New York City Marathon co-founder once said, "The marathon is a charismatic event. It has everything. It has drama. It has competition. It has camaraderie. It has heroism. Every jogger can't dream of being an Olympic champion, but he can dream of finishing a marathon." The Marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896, included as a tribute to an ancient Greek Soldier.
It was reserved as a men only event until 1984. To this day it is tradition for the men's Olympic marathon to be the last event of the athletics calendar, just prior to the closing ceremony. So while many of us won’t make it to the Olympics, it is possible to be part of history and join up to 5000 people at the inaugural Sunshine Coast Marathon, on August 25 and 26. With over 500 marathons worldwide, it is no longer an event reserved only for Olympians.
The inaugural Sunshine Coast Marathon & Community Run Festival is Australia’s newest running festival celebrating healthy lifestyles, the great outdoors and community participation. If you’re not up for the full 42km event, register before 23 August for the 2km, 5km, 10km, or half marathon distances. The course includes spectacular views; and the atmosphere of the beautiful Sunshine Coast beachfront will be abuzz with plenty of spectator spots and race day activities for the whole family to enjoy.
The Sunshine Coast will celebrate Australia Day with an impressive line-up of Aussie activities and events.
During the silly season we drive ourselves crazy with stress and planning, so why not fill your Sunday’s with fun and relaxation at Family Fun Days and Music in Mooloolaba, on the naturally refreshing Sunshine Coast.
It’s that time of year to pull on some outlandish socks and celebrate your love of golf at the Holden Scramble final and the Australian PGA championships.
